SASSA SRD Eligibility Checklist
Before you apply for the R370 grant, it’s crucial to know if you qualify. Use our simple, official checklist to find out.
The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant provides essential support to millions of South Africans, but it has very strict eligibility criteria. Applying when you don’t qualify will only result in a declined status. To save you time and help you understand your position, we have created this simple SASSA SRD eligibility checklist based on the official government requirements.
Go through each point below. You must be able to say “YES” to all the requirements in the first section and “NO” to all the requirements in the second section to be eligible.

You are a South African Citizen, Permanent Resident, or Refugee registered with Home Affairs.
You are between the ages of 18 and 60.
You are currently living within the borders of South Africa.
Part 2: You MUST NOT Be Receiving Funds From These Sources
You must not have an income of more than R624 per month in your bank account.
You must not be receiving any payments from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

What if I receive money from my family? Does that count as income?
Potentially, yes. The automated system checks for any funds entering your bank account. If the total amount you receive in a month is more than R624, the system will flag it as an income source, and your application will be declined. Even if the money is a gift, it can make you ineligible for that month.
I am self-employed with a very low income. Can I still apply?
Yes, you can apply. The key factor is the income threshold. As long as the income that enters your bank account each month is consistently below R624, you may still be eligible for the SRD grant.
